IN A WESTERLY WIND it is possible to get a thermal from Westbury town and head out toward the east. As you come up against the danger area boundary try to move north or northeast away from it if you see good lift or clouds in that direction. Grab one and gain height while you gradually drift back toward the danger area. This is easier for hang-gliders. The wind has to be west or west-northwest for paragliders to get away to the east.
Follow the B3098 road east with the main railway line you your north. As you approach the A£60 avoid following the road as it loops south into the danger area but instead, cut across closer to the railway to the far side, when the road loops back north again. You can see the Salisbury Plain danger area ahead - keep it to your right.
IN A NORTHWESTERLY WIND there is not much potential unless you can gain height back against the danger area, then push forward and out toward Westbury town to look for a second thermal. In this way you can move west to a point south of the town where you need a good thermal off the town at which point you can go south along or west of the A350 road.
IN A NORTH OR NORTHEASTERLY wind the potential is great for a trip all the way south or south-southwest to the coast. The best wind direction is north with a little east in it because this will allow you to skirt the danger area using your GPS. Head from the hill back to the chalk quarry but do not pass over it because it is mostly inside the danger area. This will matter if you intend to put your XC flights into the BHPA's league because they are pretty tight about infringements.
At this point if the thermal is going inside the edge of the danger area you can go onto bar and skirt the edge of D-123 until you get the the main road (the A350). At this point you are allowed to enter the danger area and go south to Warminster. This is an accepted route with the BHPA thanks to the Avon Club.
Stay over or west of the roads as they go south to Warminster
The short cut that has been agreed with the Army and the BHPA as a non-infringement of D-123. BEWARE though, not to fly at all east of the A350. If you intend to take part in the BHPA XC league I would suggest you staya few meters west of the route just to make sure. This may seem to be a minimal shortcut but it makes all the difference between bombing and making it way down south.
You can follow A360 until it meets a south heading branch road going into Warminster. You can now follow this road south. Then you are in clear airspace again and Warminster is in front of you. In this direction thermals will take you as far as Lyme Bay. A sea-breeze may take you down the coast into Cornwall?
